Society Standards

Code of Conduct

These standards apply to all members, volunteers and guests at Society events and in our online spaces. They help keep our community safe, welcoming and collaborative.

I.

Purpose & Scope

The Red Deer LARP Society (RDLS) is dedicated to providing a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for all participants, regardless of their background, identity or level of LARP experience.

This Code of Conduct applies to all members, players, Storytellers (STs), staff and spectators. It governs behavior at all official RDLS events (in-person games, meetings, workshops) as well as all digital spaces associated with the Society (Discord, Facebook groups, emails and private messages discussing game affairs).

II.

 General Conduct

We are a collaborative community. To maintain a healthy environment, all members are expected to:

Show Good Sportsmanship: Treat fellow players and staff with respect. Play to lift others up, accept in-game losses gracefully and support the shared narrative.

Respect Venues and Public Spaces: RDLS relies on rental spaces and public cooperation. Respect the rules of our venues, clean up after yourself and keep highly visible props or fake weapons inside designated game areas.

Cooperate with Staff: Storytellers and board members work hard to run these events. Follow their logistical and safety directions promptly. If you disagree with a ruling, address it respectfully after the scene or event.

III.

Harassment and Sexual Harassment Policy

RDLS has a zero-tolerance policy for harassment. Harassment is defined as any unwelcome conduct verbal, physical or visual that demeans, humiliates or intimidates an individual.

 Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment is strictly prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to:

*   Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors or suggestive comments.

*   Inappropriate or non-consensual physical contact. (Remember: Touching always requires explicit, verbal, out-of-character consent).

*   Unwelcome commentary about a person's body, appearance or costume.

*   Using in-character actions, disciplines or roleplay scenarios to force sexually suggestive or non-consensual romantic narratives onto another player.

 Bullying and Intimidation

Bullying has no place in our community. This includes out-of-character behavior designed to isolate, demean or abuse another member. Prohibited actions include:

*   Verbal abuse, insults, yelling or threats directed at another player or staff member.

*   Targeted social exclusion or organizing campaigns to ostracize a member of the community.

**"Bleed" Manipulation:** Using in-game mechanics or narrative targeting as a passive-aggressive weapon to punish or bully a player out-of-character.

 Digital Conduct and Cyberstalking

Because a significant portion of our community interaction occurs online, we hold our digital spaces to the same high standards as our live events.

 Cyberstalking & Digital Harassment

We prohibit any form of digital harassment or cyberstalking. This includes:

*  Stalking & Monitoring: Repeatedly viewing, tracking or commenting on a member's personal social media profiles, location or online activity in a way that causes distress or fear.

*  Unwanted Direct Messages: Sending persistent, unwelcome private messages across Discord, email or social media after being asked to stop.

*  Doxxing: Publishing a member’s private personal information (such as real name, address, phone number or workplace) without their explicit consent.

*  Cyberbullying: Publicly shaming, mocking, or spreading malicious rumors about a member on online forums, social media or shared chat channels.

IV.

 Safety and In-Game Mechanics

To ensure physical and emotional safety during intense, high-immersion scenes, players must adhere to the following tools:

*  The Check-In System: Use the silent hand check-in (twisting a hand "so-so") to check on a player's emotional state.

    *Thumbs Up:* Proceed.

    *Thumbs Down:* Stop immediately.

*Flat Hand:* Dial back the intensity.

**The Right to Opt-Out:** Any player has the right to step away from a scene that is triggering or overwhelming. Staff will handle the narrative transition fairly.

**Banned Themes:** Explicit depictions of hate groups, hate speech and sexual violence are strictly banned from all narratives and character concepts. Real-world divisive politics are to be kept out of game spaces.

V.

Reporting and Enforcement Procedures

How to Report

If you experience or witness a violation of this Code of Conduct, please report it. You can make a report to any RDLS Board Member or Storyteller:

1.  In-Person: Approach a staff member at an event.

2.  Digital: Email the board directly or message an administrator on our official channels.

3.  Anonymity: Reports can be made anonymously; however, anonymous reports may limit our ability to fully investigate the incident.

 Enforcement Actions

The RDLS Board will review all complaints thoroughly and impartially. Violations of this Code of Conduct will result in disciplinary action tailored to the severity of the offense. Actions may include, but are not limited to:

*   A formal verbal or written warning.

*   Mandatory mediation or a structured break from the game.

*   Temporary suspension from events and digital spaces.

*   Permanent expulsion from the Red Deer LARP Society and a lifetime ban from all events.

*We are here to build a safe, exciting and cooperative storytelling community. Thank you for doing your part to keep the Red Deer LARP Society a safe space for everyone.*
